Saving vs investing: when should you do each?
Understand when your money should stay safe and when it might make sense to invest it.

Two different jobs
Savings and investments do different jobs. Savings protect money you'll need soon. Investments grow money you won't need for a while.
Mixing the two up is where most people get caught out, either by taking risk with rent money or by leaving long-term money in cash for decades.
When to save
Keep money in savings when you need certainty about what it will be worth on a specific date.
- An emergency fund of three to six months of spending
- Anything you need in the next one to three years
- Short-term goals like a holiday or a new laptop
When to invest
Money you won't touch for five years or more is usually better invested. Over longer periods, markets have historically recovered from downturns and outpaced inflation, though past performance is never a guarantee.
Doing both at once
You don't have to choose. Build your emergency fund first, then set up a monthly contribution to an investment portfolio for longer goals. Automating both makes the habit stick.
