Building an emergency fund before you invest
Why a cash buffer comes first, how big it should be, and where to keep it.

Why it comes first
An emergency fund stops a surprise bill from forcing you to sell investments at a bad time. It's the foundation everything else sits on.
How much you need
Most people aim for three to six months of essential spending. If your income is irregular, lean towards the higher end.
Where to keep it
Somewhere safe and easy to reach, like an easy-access savings account. The goal is availability, not growth.
